Carmina Burana – a contemporary view

In one of the most popular compositions in the classical repertoire, Carmina Burana, written in 1934/35, composer Carl Orff managed to transpose an archaic medieval musical language into the expressive music of his own time

Werner Englert went a step further by translating Carl Orff’s music into a popular music idiom: jazz, soul, blues, reggae and gospel. Orff’s material proves to be ideal for this transition, which proves to be a very coherent and homogenous contemporary reading of the Carmina Burana. The many performances have met with phenomenal success
